Biography

Emily Burkhead is an intermedia artist working in textiles, experiential animation, performance art, mixed media, and found materials. Burkhead’s research is grounded in queer feminine expression mixed with a fascination of girlhood and kitsch aesthetics employed to investigate the effects of a gendered childhood. Art making gives her a language for expressing the nuances of emotion and experience that words cannot. As a queer, neurodivergent woman, She is able to better understand herself and the surrounding social landscape through her practice. Burkhead is from Memphis, Tennessee and she earned a BA in Urban Studies with a minor in Film and Media Studies from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
