Biography
Ph.D., Second Language Studies, Michigan State University
Ayman Mohamed is an assistant professor of Arabic at Michigan State University. He pursued graduate studies in the U.S, obtaining an MA degree in Linguistics and ESL from the University of North Texas under a Fulbright grant. He received his PhD from Michigan State University SLS Program with a focus on second language vocabulary acquisition. His research interests include task-based learning, incidental vocabulary acquisition and using eye tracking techniques in second language reading. Dr. Mohamed has taught all levels of Arabic at MSU, as well as Egyptian dialect classes. In addition, Dr. Mohamed’s major contribution to the program was his work on curricular development through hybrid and online classes and pedagogical innovation by publishing open-source textbooks for elementary Arabic. Articles by Dr. Mohamed were published in journals such as the Studies in Second Language Acquisition (Cambridge University Press), Journal of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL) and Foreign Language Annals. He is co-authoring a textbook in Egyptian Arabic (in press) by Georgetown University to advance teaching and learning Arabic as a multidialectal language. He was recently awarded the MSU IT Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award for his effort in utilizing technology to advance open education and inclusive pedagogy in LCTLs.
Projects
Elementary Arabic I
An open textbook on Beginner Arabic for undergraduate students who are taking Arabic in their first semester. It addresses letters and sounds of Arabic along with basic skills in reading, speaking and writing. The book can be used as a self-study resource or as the main textbook in beginning Arabic classes. It is used at MSU for ARB 101 classes.
Elementary Arabic II
An open textbook on Elementary Arabic for undergraduate students who are taking Arabic in their second semester. It addresses language structures in theme-based modules that cover the four language skills. The book can be used as a self-study resource or as the main textbook in beginning Arabic classes. It is used at MSU for ARB 102 classes.

The Less Commonly Taught and Indigenous Languages Partnership, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and housed in the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) at Michigan State University, is directing grants to allow faculy to engage in strategic collaboration across institutions of higher education. The grant funds the developement of an open textbook in Advanced Arabic with a focus on developing multidialectal competence. The tile of the project is EMBRACE : Enhancing Multidialectal Basis in Resources for Arabic Contemporary Education.
